Theory

Boring – that could be many students’ first reaction to learning musical theory. Younger students might not pick it up yet, but those in higher grades will realise the importance of having strong theoretical foundation. It is crucial for the understanding of the character, the colour, the phrases and structure of your playing, it helps you to perform better. Lower grades learn about pitches, harmony and rhythm; while higher grades theory reveals the other aspects of music, including the history and composition. It may seem like another subject to learn, but if you don’t pick that up, it would be the missing link you need to see the whole picture of the universe.
